Farewell

Today is my last day of work at OSU. While I am moving on in the fall to an exciting new position at Northwestern University, it is difficult to say goodbye to a place I’ve worked eleven years.
For my colleagues in the Digital Union: you are the best. Over the years, I learned that no …Read more at the full article: Farewell

Develop apps and earn cool stuff at this weekend’s Microsoft 8 Winter Workshop!

For some reason, hardware and software developers simply love giving away tons of really expensive things—ranging from free software and games to phones, computers, and tablets—in exchange for hardly any work by the lucky recipients. Whenever a huge piece of technology is released to the public, you can bet that …Read more at the full article: Develop apps and earn cool stuff at this weekend’s Microsoft 8 Winter Workshop!

Using Digital Tools and Services to Extend Your Reach and Broaden Your Impact

At the 2012 Innovate! conference, I attended a breakout session led by Kimberly Lightle and Jessica Fries-Gather titled “Using Digital Tools and Services to Extend Your Reach, Broaden Your Impacts.” The presentation revolved around methods that universities are using to engage the public with their projects. Educators often turn to the web, in addition to “traditional …Read more at the full article: Using Digital Tools and Services to Extend Your Reach and Broaden Your Impact

How to be Social

There is this thing that we are doing at OSU Comprehensive Cancer Center–The James.  It is called “Relationship-Based Care” (RBC). The premise is that, to create a Caring and Healing environment, you must focus on three things: Care of Self, Care of Colleagues, and Care of Patients.  Currently this is nursing work, but we have …Read more at the full article: How to be Social

Post, Respond, Repeat . . .

Post, Respond, Repeat . . . Does this sound familiar to you?  Then I guess you took the same online course I did.  You didn’t?  You mean they’re all like that?  Ugh!
If you’re less than enthusiastic to participate in online discussion forums, it’s probably because you’re stuck in the rut of the “Post, Respond, Repeat” …Read more at the full article: Post, Respond, Repeat . . .

Journey: an interactive parable.

Journey, Title Screen

I recently had the pleasure of playing one of the most innovative video games of the new year. Journey, developed by Thatgamecompany (TGC) and distributed over the Playstation 3 Network, takes an entirely novel approach to game design.
Journey is simple in form. You are a robed figure in the desert, and you are on a …Read more at the full article: Journey: an interactive parable.

The Value of Small Discussion Groups in an Online Environment

My online Sociology courses are capped at 60 students. To make the discussion board forums a bit more manageable, I subdivide classes into three or four separate forums of 15-20 students each.
I have found that this has two main effects: it encourages a greater sense of community among students, and helps to discourage plagiarism.
Smaller groups …Read more at the full article: The Value of Small Discussion Groups in an Online Environment

Culture Shaping with Shamrocks Shakes

Every year around this time, the Digital Union team heads to High Street for some Shamrock Shakes and Chocrocks (Chocolate and Shamrock). It’s fun to reconnect with Uncle O’Grimacy. A Shamrock Shake was an annual treat for me growing up in Wisconsin (see a vintage commercial)…and continued to be after I moved to Ohio to …Read more at the full article: Culture Shaping with Shamrocks Shakes

We Feel Fine

Valentines Day is a day for feelings. Have you ever wondered how people feel on Valentines Day compared to other days?  Or, how people in their 50’s feel on this holiday compared to people in their 20’s.  Perhaps you’ve wondered if people in Montana generally feel happier than people in Ohio. How do women in …Read more at the full article: We Feel Fine
