Cell Phone
Noise Pollution

Metamaterials are a hot topic in
electrical engineering because they
make use of conventional materials
in interesting new ways. Take a
familiar material, like metal, and
by changing its shape, its electrical
properties may be altered. Metals can
function like plastic, or plastics can
function like metals. We are designing
a Frequency Selective Surface (FSS) to
filter out cell phone signals for places
such as theatres and auditoriums. As a
proof of concept, we have designed an
FSS to allow cell phone signals to pass
through it at 10GHz, while blocking all
other frequencies.
