What Not to Do

Here are poor examples of photographs you shouldn't put on your site

One concern that was mentioned from the focus group is using depressing and over-dramatic photographs. Adolescents already feel what these pictures express, and they don't need to be shown with a reminder of it. They need to feel inspired, optimistic and that there is hope.

Photo quality can also be a concern. The Ditigal Union recommends starting with an original picture directly uploaded from a camera or at it's original upload size from a website and then adjust the image size from there. Notice how this one has been stretched using arrows rather than adjusting the actual image size in a program such as Photoshop, and the quality of the photo has decreased.

Also make sure the picture is clear and crisp. Notice below the poor photo quality.

Remember to not use pictures that can be dated. For example, in this picture with the cake it says 2008 which removes the present tense feeling of the site, and forces it into the past. Also, in the second picture, the girl is playing "Guitar Hero" a very popular video game right now. However in 5 years, there will be a chance it's now old news and considered "uncool" to be playing with. In a few years, adolescents will look at this and think they may not be able to relate to the teens they see because the "times have changed". Only use time dated pictures if you're going to be continuously updating.
