Setting Up a Facebook Support Group

1. Under the group link, select “create a new group”.
2. Create a Group name. EX. “O-H Hospice Adolescent Bereavement Group”
3. Under Network, leave it global in case your teens are not all in your network (networks are schools, cities, organizations, etc.)
4. Under description we chose to list our rules for discussion
5. Group type is unimportant other than you want it to look professional, we chose to do “student group”, “social group”.
6. Be sure to use the facilitator’s email address as contact in case anyone needs to contact you outside of facebook
7. Once you’re finished with step 1, save changes and continue
8. We chose to upload a picture of a girl from our site and listed the website for additional information on grieving and bereavement services.
9. For options we chose to only enable the discussion board for the time being so we could test the monitor
10. For access the group should be secret: “The group will not appear in search results or in the profiles of its members. Membership is by invitation only, and only members can see the group information and content”. This will protect the confidentiality of the group so no one but group members can see the page and content and no one else can see that these members are part of the group.
11. Once you are finished with step 2, save changes and continue
12. You will then invite teens to join the group, but you will need to add them friends before you can invite the group to join first.
13. Teens cannot request for you to add them to the group because it cannot be found in the search. Give them your email and have them contact you when they have their accounts set up.
Post discussions on the discussion board and monitor the discussions through your email. You can message all members to remind them about upcoming events and anyone who does not follow the rules or posts inappropriately can be removed from the group, and they can also be reported to facebook.
