Creating a Facebook Account

To register for facebook the only information you have to give them is your name, birthday (for age verification purposes), your gender (male or female) and an email address which you have access to.
Once you set up an account you will be emailed a confirmation letter to the email address, which will have a link to facebook, so you can verify the account. You can put in what high school or college you have gone to, but remember people will be able to find you through that information with the search filter.
You can also join a network for your hometown and/or sometimes the school you attend, but without editing privacy settings, everyone in your hometown will be able to see all of your information. Remember, the more information you put on the website, the more exposed you are to everyone else.
When setting up your profile:
- Under Basic Info, change your birthday to only show month and day or to not show at all.
- Under the contact section, NEVER put your address or phone number. If any of your friends want to know where you live or how to contact you, they can ask you or you can send them a private message through the inbox feature.
- As far as the rest of the profile site, just make sure you are posting anything too personal, such as your class or after-school schedule. It’s not safe for anyone but your family to know where you’ll be at all times.
Talk with your parents about their rules for your Internet usage, as well as make a decision on whether or not you are going to have a secure profile or restricted profile. More information is available on the privacy settings page.
