Developing an Online Community for Grieving Adolescents

When creating an online community for grieving adolescents, what needs to be considered for creating a useful and effective website?

girl in black and whiteThe purpose of this project is to aid adolescent bereavement support group facilitators and agencies as they make the transition to provide support services to grieving teens online. The idea is to create these online communities to compliment already existing bereavement support groups. These communities can assist adolescents by informing them about the grief process prior to attending the support group meetings and support in the time between group meetings. We have compiled information from a focus group with Mount Carmel Hospice and existing literature on bereavement support groups, online communities, web design, and internet safety for bereavement support agencies, to consider when working with an IT or web designer for their own agency's website. Our tutorial will guide them through some suggestions for education, the benefits and concerns of different forums of online peer support, and additional tips we have found that should be considered during construction of a adolescent bereavement support group site.
