Bereavement Services

- What is bereavement? Many teens know that bereavement is related to death but what IS it exactly? An explanation will help teens feel prepared to use the services.
- What bereavement services are offered? Teens will want to know what services are available to them at the agency – is there a counselor available to talk to one-on-one? Are there chaplain services available so teens can ask spirituality questions related to death and the loss of their love one? What does the support group offer?
- What activities are offered through the support group? Teens will be interested to know what activities to expect from bereavement group. Pictures can be a good way to show what the group does, so long as it does not feature any of the teens involved with group (to keep their identities confidential) but showcasing pictures from art therapy or pictures of the staff may make teens understand what to expect. You can also use stories to explain other teen’s experiences.
Here are two examples of two teens’ experiences with bereavement. Stories can be taken from youth that participate with the group, but remember to change the names and not use pictures of the corresponding teens.
