Charles G. Orosz, Ph.D

Dr. Orosz

Dr. Charles G. Orosz, more commonly known to those around him as Charley or CGO, earned his bachelors in biology at Cleveland State University, where he then went on to obtain his masters of science in physiology, and later his PhD in Regulatory Biology. After holding fellowship positions in the Department of Immunology Research at Cleveland State University, the Immunobiology Research Center at the University of Wisconsin, and the Immunobiology Research Center at the University of Minnesota, he became a professor at the Ohio State University in the departments of Surgery, Pathology, and Molecular Virology, Immunology, & Medical Genetics. As the Director of the Clinical Histocompatibility Laboratory and the Director of the Transplant Sciences Program, his main research interests included: a) analysis of graft-reactive lymphocyte redistribution/function in murine cardiac and renal allograft transplantations, b) chronic rejection do to TGF-beta activation and oxidant stress, c) accommodation and immune regulation in murine allograft recipients, d) clinical immune monitoring in transplant patients, and f) the development of agent-based computer simulations of immune responses to study complexity and systems thinking in transplant immunobiology. His interest in complexity led him to come up with the idea of creating the Basic Immune Simulator.

He held several committee positions including but not limited too: the president-elect and member of the American Society for Histocompatibility and Immmunogenetics (ASHI) 2003-2005, the membership committee for the American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTS) 2002-2005, the scientific review board of the Immune Tolerance Network (ITN) 2002-2005, the steering committee of the Federation of Clinical Immunology Societies (FOCIS) 2002-2005, several committees for the American Society of Transplantation (ASTS) 2003-2005, and several committees at the Ohio State University. A distinguished writer/publisher, Dr. Orosz also served on several editorial boards, grant review boards, and publication review boards.

Dr. Orosz was a busy man, but still found time to be a wonderful mentor and friend. Those who knew him realized they were in the presence of greatness as he looked at problems in new ways and motivated those around him to excellence. He has inspired many students’ love of immunology, and provided guidance to many long finished with their professional training. With his avant-garde approach to immunology, he was able to see potential where others could not. Always present with a smile, and a friendly disposition he made every one around him feel welcome and appreciated. It is rare that one has the blessing of meeting and working under a man like Dr. Orosz. On Sunday, August 7, 2005, Dr. Charles G. Orosz passed away, losing a hard fought battle to cancer. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him and his legacy will continue to inspire those he left behind.
