The Disability Studies program at OSU was cpnnected to and grew out of Brenda Brueggemann’s appointment to the Modern Language Association’s committee on disability issues. This committee inspired Brueggemann to begin making a program here at OSU. In 2000, a committee was comprised of many people from different departments and colleges, in order to create a truly interdisciplinary program, and brought together by Linda Harlow. The group was also working on an American Sign Language program at the same time.
The undergraduate Disability Studies minor was launched in 2002 and has now had four successful years. The Graduate Interdisciplinary Specialization (GIS) in Disability Studies (DS) held its first core course, taught by Brenda Brueggemann, in the Summer of 2006.
