The Adapted Recreational Sports Program was created for students, faculty, staff and members of the community with disabilities. It has been in existence for close to 30 years. It was created by the PLEP program, which was a federal grant brought in by Mary Daniels and Fred Beekman. When the grant funds ran out, the Department of Recreational Sports decided to continue the growth of the program.

The program was originally free to participate in; however, Heidi Keller, the current Director of ARS, changed the fee structure so that it is now free for Ohio State students with disabilities, but faculty, staff and members of the community must pay. Keller did this in order to expand the program and maintain the equipment and staff.

The program has grown over the 30 years and now offers classes such as wheelchair strength training, adapted aquatics, gymnastics, yoga and much more. The program has partnered with other offices on campus including the ADA Coordinator’s Office and the Office for Disability Services in order to get more involvement.
