In Summer Quarter of 2006 the first core course of the Graduate Interdisciplinary Specialization (GIS) in Disability Studies (DS) was offered. The GIS-DS has been in development for the past six years. This new course was taught by Prof. Brenda Brueggemann and included such weekly topics and readings as: defining disability; the Disability Rights Movement; disability narratives; disability policy and law; access technology; diversity and/in disability; Disability Studies as an academic field; and research methods/methodologies in Disability Studies. The course also included guest speakers such as Dr. Margo Izzo from the Nisonger Center who offered a history and highlights about the FAME Project, Ken Petri from the Web Accessibility Center who demonstrated access technology, and Dr. Susan Burch from Gallaudet University who discussed disability and history, the process of collaboration in disability history research, and disability/deafness and its regional, cultural, historical racial, and gendered intersections.
