The Enabling the Humanities Conference was held in April of 1998 and was the first academic conference specifically intersecting disability within the Humanities. It was funded by a grant from the English department at Ohio State and a grant from the Ohio Humanities Council both given to Brenda Brueggemann. The three day event included presentations from key people within the field of Disability Studies such as: Rosemarie Garland-Thomson, Lennard Davis, Anne Finger and more. The title for the Modern Language Association’s book “Disability Studies: Enabling the Humanities” grew out of this conference.
