Mediating Between Literature and History: Testimonio and Asociacion Madres de Plaza de Mayo

As sub-altern studies becomes an increasingly prominent historical sub-discipline, the need for new source material about the experiences of marginalized people continues to grow. From 1976 to 1983 a military dictatorship in Argentina kidnapped and tortured an estimated 30,000 people in what later became known as the Dirty War. Many of the survivors recorded their experiences using a genre of literature known as testimonio. This project explores the use of testimonio as a source of new historical perspectives about the Argentine Dirty War through a content analysis of survivor Nora Strejilevich’s A Single Numberless Death.
