Heart Attack Care-Seeking Study

Professor Angelo Alonzo (Sociology)
Brian Weaver (Accounting & MIS)

The purpose of this study is to understand care-seeking behavior surrounding acute coronary syndromes (ACS) through the application of an integrated care-seeking model and utilization of an Internet-based survey instrument. Delay in seeking care prevents individuals with ACS from obtaining the full benefit of medical therapy. This study focuses on the way in which people evaluate and cope with ACS symptoms, as well as how a person’s social network and health communication practices influence their behavior. Statistical models are used to estimate the effects of variables on care-seeking delay from acute symptom onset to emergency room arrival.
