November 17 - 18, 2005  eDemocracy: Building Democracy Through Online Citizen Deliberation

Article Abstracts

The Center for Interdisciplinary Law and Policy Studies (CILPS), along with Technology Enhanced Learning and Research (TELR/Digital Union),  the Department of Journalism and Communication, the Department of City and Regional Planning, and the Ohio Supercomputer Center, invite you to join us November 17-18 (pre-conference reception 4:30 to 6:30, November 16) for a hands-on workshop to introduce government personnel and other interested citizens to the emerging world of web applications to foster citizen input into public policy making.

In addition to hearing distinguished keynote speakers and panelists, participants will engage in a mock on-line public policy deliberation using Elluminate , a leading live Web conferencing and eLearning tool, to assist decision making through online citizen group conversation. This mock deliberation will take place both asynchronously and in real-time, using text and audio.

Audience members also will be organized into brainstorming sessions to identify what they regard as the greatest opportunities for, and obstacles to, the deployment of such technologies with regard to their own organizational missions, and will meet in small groups to describe key issues facing government bodies that seek to implement online citizen engagement initiatives.  Additional information is available from Sol Bermann , Associate Director, Center for Interdisciplinary Law and Policy Studies, Moritz College of Law; phone: (614) 688-4192.
