About the 2001 MegaConferenceIII Virtual Picnic

As part of the October 3, 2001 MegaConferenceIII, a special Virtual Picnic event will be offered for participants who wish to enjoy a rare heirloom Wisconsin Black Popcorn during the picnic.

Key to the discipline of the Virtual Picnic is the drive to develop the ability of community-based concerns to make coherent and culturally compelling videoconference presentations about themselves as a way to distinguish their brands.

This idea is sometimes referred to as Glocalism: honoring the local in view of a global marketplace. The concept of the picnic adds two dimensions to a videoconference:

 1) the real time sensorial experience of sharing the taste of a food or flavor and

2) sharing the heritage/story behind the food or product.

In this way, participants may taste an heirloom variety of early American popcorn, as over the videoconference, they hear from the particular farmer about how he (or she) has maintained that variety and continued to grow it as did their family before.

The Virtual Picnic was created by Benjamin Thompson of Hyper Media Education, a non-profit new media development and production group in Los Angeles as part of the Small Farm Network project (for more information see www.smallfarmnetwork.com/ )
