Welcome to this week’s continuation of the Sneak Peek Series. So far, we’ve covered Content, Auto Completion Methods, Class Progress and User Progress. This week, we’ll be taking a look at the Calendar tool.
You may be able to access the Calendar tool from the Edit Course page or via your Course Homepage.
The Calendar tool has new features, and existing features have been expanded. Instructors can import events, add events, set due dates and manage individual tasks. Any due dates or availability dates for tasks still in draft mode will not show up in a student’s calendar. Students can import events, view due / availability dates once they are published, as well as manage tasks.
In addition, students and instructors can view the calendar from one of five viewpoints: Agenda, Day, Week, Month or List. Each view arranges the tasks respectively: by category, by day, by week, by month, by checklist. In List mode, you have the option to filter your results by category. For example, you may choose to only show your Grades availability and due dates.

Instructors will have two additional buttons in each view- the ability to Create Events and Set Due Dates. In the List view shown in the above image, however, there is a More Actions button which includes the option to Change Event Visibility and Offset Dates.
The image below is an example of the Calendar tool from an Instructor perspective, using the Agenda view within one particular course.

You can see a select number of courses on the calendar, all of your courses or only one course.
So, how do you change from one course to another?
It’s relatively painless to do. In the image above, I’ve highlighted the course name, Megan- Carmen Sandbox. That tells you that you are only looking at information for that particular course. When you click on the down-arrow next to the course name, you’ll see a drop-down list of all of your other courses, as shown in the image below.

If you want to see all your courses in one calendar, click Show All Calendars. All courses from the list will appear in the calendar. If you want to remove a course from the All Calendar list, click the ‘x’ button to the right of the course name. I you want to add a course to the All Calendar list, click the green plus sign and choose the appropriate course. Additionally, you can change the calendar colors and text size of each course by clicking on the small computer icon to the left of the green plus sign.
Keep in mind that the more courses you show at one time, the slower your calendar will be to load!
Stay tuned in the upcoming weeks to learn about how you can get items to show up (automatically) in the calendar from other tools, as well as how to create events in the Calendar and utilize the Task area of the Calendar tool.
As always, don’t forget to stop by a Carmen preview session or play in the Carmen Sandbox to check out these new features for yourself!
