Welcome to today’s continuation of the Carmen Sneak Peek series. Earlier this morning, we took a look at the Class Progress tool. Now, we’re going to tour the new-and-improved User Progress tool.
Finding User Progress
There are a number of ways you, the instructor, might access the User Progress tool.
- You can click on Edit Course and, from Edit Course page, select Go to User Progress page. From the Course Progress page, select an individual user.
- You can access User Progress through the Classlist, clicking the down-arrow next to a student’s name and selecting View Progress.
- You can also access the User Progress through the Grades tool by selecting the View Progress icon.
Students can access their User Progress by clicking their name in the upper-right corner and selecting Progress.
What Do You Need to Know About User Progress?
So what do you need to know about the new User Progress tool?
To begin, let’s do a comparison. The below image is the User Progress tool currently in use, which you can also access through the Edit Course, Grades or Classlist tool. See the DU blog post, Carmen User Progress Tool, for more information regarding the current User Progress tool.
In both the current and the new version of User Progress, you can choose to review student activity by Tool. However, now you don’t need a drop-down menu. And you can organize your results by the Last 7 Days, Last 30 Days or All Time.
The new User Progress tool is graphically enhanced to allow you to see user progress at a glance. For example, the Content indicator provides a progress bar to show you how many, out of the total number of topics, the student completed. In addition, the Grades indicator provides a color-coded bar chart.
In the image above, I’ve selected the Summary tab which shows a summary of each Progress Indicator. To obtain a more detailed report, you can either:
- Click the arrow at the far right of each item in the main window for a moderately detailed report.
- Click the tool name on Progress Indicator tab on the left for the most thorough report.
For example, the Grades indicator shows all graded item by category. To see the individual items within the category, click the item link.
As you might expect, unless final grades are released, you will be unable to see the total calculated / adjusted grade. However, once final grades are released the information will appear.
Using Settings in User Progress
By selecting Settings in the upper-right corner, you can choose which colors indicate any particular grade range. This will allow you to quickly see the grade range of each student (e.g. the Color Indicators). The color scheme chosen here for the Grades indicator will also appear in the Class Progress tool, if you’ve opted to show Grades there.
What if you don’t need to see all of these tools? Or, moreover, what if you don’t need your students to see all of these tools? Selecting Settings will also provide you options to check which Progress Indicators you’d like to display.
As it stands now, as the instructor, you will see all of the Progress Indicators. Students will only see the Progress Indicators that you choose. The Carmen team is still working with updated permissions and settings, so it may be that you’ll be able to hide unused indicators from yourself as well as from students.
I hope you enjoyed your tour of the User Progress tool. Please come again next week when we preview the new and improved Calendar tool.
