We are really getting excited about the next update to Carmen. Desire2Learn has made some significant changes to the system so it will work better in tablet devices like iPads; it will also be more accessible on desktop and laptop computers. We will be taking advantage of these changes to incorporate some OSU-specific changes to homepages, menus, and the overall visual design.
In summary, this update will bring with it a number of pedagogical and technological improvements, including:
- a new interface that will improve navigation, course management, and mobile compatibility;
- a major revision to the Content area that will provide students with easier access to course materials;
- an equally large revision to the User Progress area that will enable instructors to better gauge students’ progress toward course goals;
- more tools with the ability to send automated notifications to students or to pass information about due dates or student performance between tools.
The Carmen update is scheduled for May 3-5. Since we’re all still getting used to the semester’s calendar, I’ll unpack the significance of that date for you.
- Final exams for Spring semester end Tuesday, April 30, with Commencement on May 5 and all final grades due on May 6. We recommend you complete your final grades before the update occurs.
- May session and Summer term classes start on May 6.
In other words, when you log out of Carmen the afternoon of Friday, May 3, you can expect a whole new experience when you are able to log back in on Sunday the 5th!
Preview Opportunities
We are providing opportunities to experience the newest version of Carmen before the update. Starting the week of February 4, faculty and staff will be able to access a “sandbox” version of Carmen 10 to explore the new features. More information about this opportunity will be posted in Carmen itself on February 4.
In addition, we will present a series of preview events throughout Spring Semester. Roadshows will primarily be demonstration sessions; we’ll show you some of the best new features and answer any questions you have. At a Sandbox session, you will be able to login to an updated version of Carmen for a guided tour, with plenty of time for questions and exploration. At both events, we may even have some questions for you about our services!
