A New, Old Tool: Carmen Notifications

Megan Strathearn

Great news!  The Carmen Notifications tool is back and better than ever.  Shortly after the last Carmen update, this new feature was turned off due to technical glitches.  Now the glitches have been fixed and notifications reactivated.

The Notifications tool enables you to receive email or SMS notifications outside of Carmen about course events. You must subscribe to notifications and manage included and excluded courses each term.

For example, you can opt to:

  • receive a daily email about recent news items and information updates from the Updates widget.
  • receive separate notifications about course events such as Discussion messages, new and updated News posts, and Dropbox submissions.

Instructions for how to sign up for course notifications can be found in the Help site.

When you sign up, be sure you click the “Manage my course exclusions” link at the bottom of the Notifications area.  We recommend that you click the button to Exclude All Courses, then go through and click the blue icon next to each course for which you actually do wish to receive notices.  You may need to search for courses if you have a lengthy list.

Best Practices

The Notifications tool is user-specific. That means each user must sign up for their own notifications.  Instructors cannot manage notifications on behalf of their students. The Carmen staff cannot set up notifications for anyone else.

Instructors who want to make best use of the Notifications tool to keep students informed about course activities should:

  • require students to subscribe to notifications for their course.  Remind students of this requirement in the syllabus and in face-to-face meetings.  Instructors might want to include a link to the Help page in an initial News item.
  • make active use of the News tool.  Since Dropbox and Discussions are the only tools that send their own notifications, instructors will want to post News items about planned course activities, new items in Content, Quiz deadlines, assignment milestones, posted Grades, or other changes in the course.

Default Setting

As the default setting, Carmen will not send out notifications to you until you deliberately sign up to receive them.

When you do sign up to receive notifications, be sure to exclude the courses from which you don’t want to receive updates.  To fully exclude (or include) a course, select both the course offering  and the course offering’s enrollment section, even if there is only one section to the course.
