The 4 C’s of Leaderful Leadership

Tom Evans

This past June, I had the opportunity to attend the Educause Institute: Learning Technology Leadership program.  It was, by far, one of the best professional development programs I’ve ever been through… so far. This year the program was in Hotlanta Atlanta, Georgia and the overarching theme throughout the program was this concept of leaderful leadership.

Leaderful leadership is developed when all members of a team work and lead each other collectively, concurrently, compassionately, and collaboratively.  But what do all those C’s mean?  Read on, my friend.

Collective leadership allows team members to initiate activities and share leadership roles.  The team isn’t dependent on one individual to direct all of the decisions, but decisions are led by team members whose responsibility lie in that relevant area.

Concurrent leadership allows for multiple team members to share various segments of leadership within a team.  This helps leverage the cumulative strengths within the group to allow members to assume responsible leadership in areas where they have expertise.

Compassionate leadership is a commitment to uphold each person as a valuable contributing member of the team regardless of background or status. It is important to recognize that the combined diversity of the team members has the potential to solidify and strengthen the impact and effectiveness of the team as a whole.

Collaborative leadership allows each member to speak authoritatively for the group while remaining open to other member’s input.

As I reflect on this program, I’m reminded of a phrase from composer, Benjamin Zander.  He stated, “It’s one of the characteristics of a leader that he not doubt for a moment the capacity of the people he’s leading to realize whatever he’s dreaming.”  As leaderful leaders, we must not doubt for a moment the capacity of our team to realize the goals and dreams we’re setting out to accomplish together.
